DNV vs Non-Lucrative Visa vs Golden Visa: 2026 Comparison

Since the Golden Visa closed to new investors in April 2025, most non-EU applicants comparing Spanish residence permits are choosing between the Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) and the Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV). This article compares all three across the criteria that actually change your quality of life.

Work rights

The DNV is the only Spanish residence permit designed for remote work. NLV explicitly forbids economic activity in Spain — you can hold assets and live off passive income but cannot work for anyone, anywhere, as a rule. The Golden Visa allowed work but is closed to new applicants since April 2025 (existing holders are unaffected).

Income vs capital requirements

DNV asks for income (€2,762/month for 2026); NLV asks for savings or passive income of 400% SMI (~€28,800/year, so a similar monthly number but proven from savings rather than earnings); the closed Golden Visa asked for €500,000 in real estate or various financial investments.

Tax treatment

DNV holders can elect the Beckham regime (flat 24% up to €600k, six years). NLV holders cannot — they are taxed as ordinary residents from day one, at progressive rates. Golden Visa holders could historically use Beckham only if they moved for a qualifying reason (rarely).

Renewal and path to citizenship

All three lead to permanent residence after five years and citizenship after ten (two years for Ibero-American nationals). DNV starts with 3 years and renews for 2. NLV starts with 1 year and renews for 2+2. Golden Visa historically started with 3 years, renewed for 5.

Practically, the DNV puts you on the fastest cadence — the 3-year initial permit means you spend less time in renewal cycles during the run-up to permanent residence.

Family reunification

DNV includes family from day one with work authorisation for the spouse. NLV allows family from day one but no work authorisation. The closed Golden Visa allowed both family and work.

When each visa wins

Rules of thumb we apply in consultations:

  • You have foreign salary/freelance income: DNV.
  • You are retired or living on savings/dividends with no need to work: NLV.
  • You already hold a Golden Visa: keep it — it is grandfathered.
  • You want the fastest tax optimisation for a high salary: DNV + Beckham.

Key takeaways

  • DNV is the only current option that combines residence with the right to work remotely.
  • NLV suits retirees and dividend-income households — no work permitted.
  • Golden Visa is closed to new applicants since April 2025.
  • DNV + Beckham gives the best tax profile for high foreign salaries.
